Is your furnace making loud noises? Are you having problems in sketching out the right reasons for these noises? Learn why your furnace might be making a certain type of noise.

Furnaces are usually used when the weather calls for it. It is almost deemed, that we are looking for seasonal patterns when purchasing things like a furnace. Choosing a furnace for your home is not difficult.

The maintenance, however, is another issue which most people are not properly familiar with. When people forget to maintain their furnaces, they might experience a loud and noisy furnace after some time. Loud and irritating furnace noises can occur for a number of different reasons.

However, most people might not be aware of the reasons, their furnaces are making a certain noise. Moving on, let us talk about some of the common noises your furnace makes, and the reasons behind each of them.

A Whistling Noise:

If you hear a whistling noise from your furnace, there are two possible reasons behind that. One, the ducts of the furnace might have gaps in between. Second, you might have a clogged filter, which needs to be cleaned or replaced immediately.

Vibration or Rattling:

Vibration or rattling noises are common after you have been using the furnace for a while. These noises basically occur due to the duct screws or the duct itself being loose. You can easily add a few appropriate screws in the duct, or tape the duct properly, in order to fix this problem.

A Banging Noise:

If you hear a banging noise when your furnace turns on, there are two possible reasons behind that – oil-canning or ignition-roll out. Oil canning is basically caused due to a weak part in the duct, which might need support, whereas, ignition-roll out is basically a burst of flame, bigger than it needs to be when the furnace turns on.

A Noisy Motor:

If you hear a noise coming from the furnace, and you realize that it is coming from the motor, one of the main reasons behind this can be due to ‘Bouncing’. You might be able to solve this by placing a piece of Styrofoam under the squirrel cage, however, if the bearings are rusty or worn out, you will have to call a specialist.

Squeaking Floor Noise near the Furnace:

Sometimes, you might be walking on the floor, near your furnace, and you hear a squeaking or banging noise every time you land a step. This occurs mainly because of the ducts being too tightly secured. However, another reason behind this may be, the metal panning in your furnace might not be nailed in properly.

Your furnace is one of the most important parts of your home. You need to make sure that you maintain it properly, in order to avoid any mishaps in the future. However, if your furnace does start making noises somehow, make sure to identify the noise from the above mentioned list, and learn the reasons behind your furnace making that certain noise, to deal with it as soon as possible.
